How to use VMobility to Provide or Receive PC Support Remotely

Overview

Have you ever had a problem with your PC, and thought it would be great if someone could access your PC remotely, view your desktop, and help your diagnose a problem, update software, or change or repair settings? With VMobility, you can grant temporary access to your desktop with the DesktopSharing application. Desktop Sharing allows members of a VMobility Network to remotely access and control other computers within a VMobility Network. It uses UltraVNC to remotely control a computer. UltraVNC emulates the destination computer to make it look as if you were in front of it.

Note to experienced WinVNC Users: DesktopSharing uses the latest version of UltraVNC. Keep in mind that only one version of WinVNC server can be running at one time. If you are using your own version of WinVNC and you don't want your VMobility Network  Desktop to control your WinVNC server, then disable DesktopSharing. On the other hand, if you prefer to have your VMobility Client control your WinVNC server, then you must disable your version of WinVNC server and enable DesktopSharing control

Receiving Remote Desktop Support

DesktopSharing is ready to use as soon as you join your VMobility Network. By default, your DesktopSharing is disabled (does not allow remote control). By enabling DesktopSharing you enable your system to be remotely controlled by any Member of your VMobility Network provided they know your DesktopSharing password. To Enable DesktopSharing, follow these steps:

  1. From the VMobility Client main menu, click on OptionsPreferences.

  2. The Preferences window is displayed. Select the Desktop Sharing category.

  3. Enter a Password. Without a password, your system will not be accessible remotely. Creating a password is a security measure designed to not grant PC access to unauthorized users.

Note: Keep in mind that changing your password causes your WinVNC service to be re-started. Any remote desktop connection will be terminated if a password change takes place.

  4. Click Apply and OK to save your changes when prompted.

Remember: You need to provide the Desktop Sharing temporary password to the person who will be accessing your PC to provide remote support.

There are two ways to use the Desktop Sharing application.
  1. The first way (Option 1) is to select the member/PC, then right click the mouse and select the Desktop Sharing from the menu, and proceed to step 3. The other way (Option 2) is to select the Desktop Sharing application, followed by the Member/PC as illustrated below.

  2. If you used Option 2, the yPN Desktop Application will pop up as shown below. Make sure “Run the application with the member selected above” is checked and click “OK.”

  3. The VNC Viewer (a program that allows you to connect to and control another computer) prompt will appear. Enter the Password and select Log on to receive access to the remote PC/Member.

Once the connection is established, you will have remote control of the PC. Below is the desktop of the remote PC/Member.

For demonstration purposes, we are going to install some software to the remote PC.

As you can see, when you take over another PC using the Desktop Sharing feature, it is like you are sitting in front of the PC you have remote control of.

Note: You can establish connections to any number of computers in your VMobility network simultaneously. For instance, if you are traveling you can move between your home computer and work computer with a simple mouse click. You can also provide other user with access to view your desktop to view a presentation, troubleshoot your system, or collaborate on a document.

  4. To close the DesktopSharing session, click on the “X” on the right hand corner of the screen.
