How to Securely Share Files between PCs


Overview

Today people use the Internet to share music, documents, files and other forms of media.  They use email, P2P file sharing software,File Transfer Protocol (FTP), as well as third-party services to transfer large files that cannot be easily sent through email. Often, security is a an important concern, since hackers are always looking for ways to compromise information transferred over the Internet.

VMobility provides an easy-to-use integrated secure file-sharing application that enables you to upload, download and share files between PCs with the highest level of security. It also allows you to transfer files that are to large for email like presentations, videos, images, audio or software.

How to Enable File Sharing

  1. From the VMobility Client main menu, click on Options + Preferences.


  2. Under Category, select FileSharing.


  3. Select the Download, then select “Enable”. This will allow other VMobility-enabled PCs in your network to access your VMobility ShareFolder.


  4. Click Apply and click OK.

There are two methods of file sharing that will be discussed in this demo.

Method 1
  1. From the VMobility Client main menu, click on Options + Preferences.


  2. Under Category, select FileSharing.


  3. Click the Browse button and select the directory where the directories or files you want to share are located. You can also perform a Search for specific files using the search criteria and clicking on the Search button.

  4. To add a directory to My Shared Folders area, select the directory from the left hand pane and then click Add To Share button. The selected directory will be added to My Shared Folders area.


  5. Select Apply and click OK.
Method 2

  1. Go to “My Documents” and select the VMobility Folder (This is where your VMobility “ShareFolder” is located).


  2. Select the VMobility “ShareFolder”. We recommend that you copy and paste the content (documents, folders, images etc.) you want to share in the ShareFolder. It will be available for download.

Note: You can also drag and drop the files or folders if you want to permanently move them to the ShareFolder.

  1. At the top of the VMobility Client, select Options + Preferences.

  2. Under categories, select FileSharing.

  3. Under Category, select Download.

  4. Make sure “Enable” is bulleted to allow others to download files.

  5. Under “Password to access your files, “check “Password.”


  6. Enter the password of your choice. (Note: The password must be 8 characters in length and less than 41 characters and also case-sensitive.)

  7. Select “Apply” and click “OK.”

  8. Note: To password protect the Upload Folder; follow the same instructions, except select Upload instead of the Download.


How to Download files from a another PC’s ShareFolder

  1. Select the VMobility member/PC you want to access. In this case “jgreene” is the member we are using as an example.


  2. Click the "File Sharing" icon.


  3. Make sure “Run the application with the member selected above” is checked and click “OK.”


    The VMobility File Sharing client will attempt to connect to the VMobility File Sharing of the selected member. Depending on the state of the VMobility File Sharing of the target member and its security settings, you'll be presented with one of 3 possible outcomes:

    • If the target member has Allow others to download files enabled with no password protection, the content of the VMobility File Sharing directory of the member being contacted is displayed in the right pane of the VMobility File Sharing Client window.
    • If the target member has Allow others to download files disabled or if their VMobility Client version does not support VMobility File Sharing, you will not be able to make a connection. The following error message is displayed: The file sharing service was not enabled by this member.
    • If the target member has Allow others to download files enabled and is protecting its Shared Folder directory with a password, you'll be prompted to enter a password before proceeding. After you successfully enter the password, the content of the Shared Folder directory of the member being contacted is displayed in the right pane of the VMobility File Sharing Client window.


  4. Once the connection to the selected Member is established, the File Sharing window will be displayed with the following:

    Local Resources
    Under this section, you can change the directory in which all the files downloaded to your system are to be saved. It is also the directory from where you can select files to upload to other Members.
    By default, the default download directory is used. You can change the default download Local Directory in one of the following ways:

    • From the VMobility File Sharing client, click on the Browse button (left pane) and select a new directory or
    • Create a new directory by clicking the New Folder button.

    Remote Resources
    This shows the remote Member's resources - its Shared Folder directory and its content. This section contains the files and directories shared by the remote Member.  You can select files and directories from this section and download them into your Local Resources directory.


  5. Under the “Remote Resources” section, choose the folder/file/directory you want to download from.
    In this example, we chose the “Shared Folder.” In the figure below the content of the “Shared Folder” is being displayed.


    Note: If the folder(s) are being password protected, the following prompt will appear. You must enter the password to access the folder.

  6. Double click the folder/file you wish to download and select “<<Download.”


    There is a progress bar on the lower left of the VMobility Client.



How to Enable the Upload Feature

  1. From the VMobility Client main menu, click on Options + Preferences.


  2. Under Category, select FileSharing.


  3. The File Sharing window will appear. Select Upload under the Category section. Note: By default, the Upload feature is disabled. Under Allow others to upload files, select Enable.


  4. Select Apply and click OK.

  1. Select the VMobility member/PC you want to access. In this case “jgreene” is the member we are using as an example.


  2. Click the "File Sharing" icon.


  3. A prompt will appear to attempting  make a connection to the other computer. Make sure “Run the application with the member selected above” is checked.


  4. Once the connection to the selected Member is established, the File Sharing window is displayed

    Local Resources
    The left hand pane of the File Sharing window shows your Local Resources. It is the directory from where you can select files to upload to other Members.

    Remote Resources
    The right hand pane of the File Sharing window shows the remote Member's resources - its Shared Folder directory and its content.
    This section contains the files and directories shared by the remote Member.  You can select files and directories from this section and download them into your Local Resources directory.

  5. Locate the file you want to upload by selecting, the “Select Local Directory” dropdown menu and choosing which Drive or you can Browse or Search for the document/file/folder.


  6. Once you locate the file, click "Upload>>" and select "Close" when you are done.



How to Remove Folders being Shared

  1. From the VMobility Client main menu, click on Options + Preferences.


  2. Under Category, select FileSharing.


  3. The File Sharing window will appear. Select the folder/file/directory you want to remove and select Remove Share.


  4. You will be prompted to decide if you want to remove the folder for sharing. Select Yes.


    The illustration below shows that the folder has been removed.
